User:Ulises Heureaux
I am currently a graduate student at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, class of 2010. I am concentrating in foreign policy, but I have maintained my passionate interests in Brazil, racial relations and sociology from undergrad.
I graduated magna from the University of South Florida with a BA in history. Aside from that, I am 22, I love history and would be happy to begin contributing to this site. Latin American issues will be a very good place to start, as I have specialized on the region and because I speak Spanish and Portuguese fluently.
I am a huge believer in foreign policy realism, and would be happy to speak with anyone about Mearsheimer, Waltz, etc. Nelson Mandela is one of my personal heroes.
What is Wikipedia?
[edit]Wikipedia is a multilingual, web-based, free content encyclopedia project, operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization.
As of September 2007, Wikipedia had approximately 8.2 million articles in 253 languages, comprising a combined total of over 1.41 billion words for all Wikipedias. The English Wikipedia edition passed the 2,000,000 article mark on September 9, 2007 with a total of over 615 million words, roughly fifteen times as many as the largest edition of Encyclopædia Britannica. Wikipedia's articles have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world and the vast majority of them can be edited by anyone with access to the Internet. Steadily rising in popularity since its inception, it currently ranks among the top ten most-visited websites worldwide. Wikipedia's name is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a type of collaborative website) and encyclopedia. Its main servers are in Tampa, Florida, with additional servers located in Amsterdam and Seoul.
Due to Wikipedia's open nature, critics have questioned its reliability and accuracy. The site has been criticized for its susceptibility to vandalism and the addition of false or unverified information, uneven quality, systemic bias and inconsistencies, and for favoring consensus over credentials in its editorial process. Wikipedia's content policies and sub-projects set up by contributors seek to address these concerns. Two scholarly studies have concluded that vandalism is generally short-lived and that Wikipedia is generally as accurate as other encyclopedias.
When creators of on-line content were collectively named Time Person of the Year 2006, praising the accelerating success of collaboration and interaction by millions of users around the world, Wikipedia was the first particular "Web 2.0" service mentioned, followed by YouTube and MySpace.

[edit]The GNU Free Documentation License (GNU FDL or simply GFDL) is a copyleft license for free documentation, designed by the Free Software Foundation (FSF) for the GNU project. It is the counterpart to the GNU GPL that gives readers the same rights to copy, redistribute and modify a work and requires all copies and derivatives to be available under the same license. Copies may also be sold commercially, but if produced in larger quantities (greater than 100) then the original document or source code must be made available to the work's recipient.
The Manual of Style is a style guide that aims to make the encyclopedia easier to read. One way of presenting information is often just as good as another, but consistency promotes professionalism, simplicity and greater cohesion in Wikipedia articles. An overriding principle is that style and formatting should be applied consistently throughout an article, unless there is a good reason to do otherwise, except in direct quotations, where the original text is generally preserved.
If this page does not specify a preferred usage, consult other reliable guides, such as those listed below, or discuss your issues on the talk page of this manual. The Chicago Manual of Style and Fowler’s Modern English Usage are well-known style guides; Chicago provides an online guide, The Chicago Manual of Style Online. The Guardian Styleguide, the Mayfield Electronic Handbook of Technical & Scientific Writing and the CMS Crib Sheet are among online style guides that are accessible gratis.
When either of two styles is acceptable, it is inappropriate for an editor to change an article from one style to another unless there is a substantial reason to do so (for example, it is acceptable to change from American to British spelling if the article concerns a British topic, and vice versa). Edit warring over optional styles is unacceptable. If an article has been stable in a given style, it should not be converted without a style-independent reason. When it is unclear whether an article has been stable, defer to the style used by the first major contributor.
